Podcast 62 - Johnny Nobody

Johnny Nobody at the Tralf 5/25/2007

Johnny Nobody's Andrew VaethJohnny Nobody is the last of the three bands I met and recorded at the Tralf show on May 25th.

I had heard of them quite a while ago, and even met band member Andrew Vaeth, as part of The Old Sweethearts. But until this night I hadn’t seen them play.

In the band are Andrew, Colin Roberts and Jay White. I hate categorizing bands to any genre, especially as to me, they all blur the lines between styles at times and I don’t like to overthink it all. So to me a lot of bands are just “rock.” Johnny Nobody plays a harder rock than the Old Sweethearts, who are more to the country/americana side of things and there I go overthinking it all. Let’s just say that they were a good fit with Handsome Jack, who they followed.

Of course, the connection between all three bands this evening was they all have members from Lockport NY, my home. I didn’t know that until I got there, nor do I think it was set up that way - it wasn’t billed as “Lockport Night at the Tralf” or anything like that, but it was a cool coincidence and there were a lot of people there from that town. Podcast 61 - Handsome Jack

Rock and Roll with a Bluesey Soul - Handsome Jack at the Tralf May 25, 2007

Handsome JackHandsome Jack, Brian Wheat and Groggy Darlin’, and Johnny Nobody all shared a triple-bill at the Tralf for this show. We featured Brian Wheat in last week’s show and Johnny Nobody will be coming up next week.

It was especially gratifying to hear all these bands, as they all are from my hometown, Lockport NY. Lockport, of course, is a sleepy little town known for sitting on the Erie Canal. Not quite close enough to Buffalo to be considered a suburb, yet close enough to allow you to live there and work in Buffalo, it is also the County Seat of Niagara County. Podcast 60 - Brian Wheat & Groggy Darlin’

Brian WheatBrian Wheat and Groggy Darlin’ live at The Tralf May 25, 2007

I found Brian Wheat quite some time ago either from seeing his gigs listed at various places, or from his MySpace page. When I heard his samples on MySpace, I knew I’d like to put out a podcast with him. We swapped emails but I didn’t get out to see him until now. I actually just missed seeing him at the UB Center For The Arts where he appeared as part of one of the Music Is Art shows that were taped there for TV. But I was late and missed his show. I did get to see the other act, Babik, who appeared in an earlier podcast. Read the rest of this entry »

Podcast 59 - Goodbye Huston

Goodbye HustonThis week, we feature the last of the three bands I interviewed at the Xtreme Model Search 2007 in Niagara Falls.

Fans of Buffalo music probably are familiar with this band, Goodbye Huston. Their Rock-pop sound has made
them popular local performers and earned them spots on the stage with a number of national acts. Read the rest of this entry »

Podcast 58 - DoDriver

DoDriverI met and recorded DoDriver at the Xtreme Model Search May 12, 2007 at Niagara Falls Conference Center.

Their website bio describes the band as:

The rock band that will pass the test of time because of the music, not the trend. A guitar riff-based group with a real singer, and very memorable songs. Walking side by side with the great groups of the 70’s with a modern sound and sensibility.

Gorillapunch - Podcast 57

GorillapunchGorillapunch is a cool name for a band. You won’t find it in the dictionary, yet it’s sort of self explanatory and spell-able. The band is pretty cool too. You can imagine a gorilla’s punch being pretty formidable. This band plays hard-hitting rock that you will know when you hear it, just like you know it when a gorilla punches you. You can’t ignore it. This is not background music!

I met them at an event called Xtreme Model Search 2007 in Niagara Falls NY. It was held at a conference hall called Niagara Falls Conference Center, not to be confused with the Niagara Falls Convention Center, which is a block away and now known as the Seneca Niagara Casino. It’s a prime location in a section of downtown NF thats slowly being revitalized. Whether you like the casino or not, you’ve got to be glad to see new life in this area of town.

The model search, a come-and-see-if-you-have-what-it-takes-to-be-a-model expo, was new to me, but they called me and offered to have me come in and record the bands they were having play for the show. Read the rest of this entry »
