Hiatus

I’m not dead, no not really!

And it really hurts to be filling in all the great shows on the site calendar and not getting out to them. I’ve missed some great shows.

And I’d love to be out recording and putting out podcasts on some of the bands too. But, it hasn’t been possible.

I have gone out to a show or two. It’s averaged about once a month and has just been for my enjoyment, not working at all. Dee and the Housecats at Allen Hall and Jackdaw at the Mohawk are all I’ve been out to in a while.

There’s even been some great opportunities right here in Lockport that I’ve wanted to go to, but didn’t.

So what’s up?

Well, it’s that time of year where my work with the FIRST Robotics Team, The Warlocks, is taking up a huge part of my time. Not just time I spend at the school working with the students, but time that my mind is on it instead of other things. That and a couple days spent skiing (not as many as I’d like) and the high price of gasoline have all squeezed the time I have for the podcast down to nearly zip.

If you’re not familiar with it, FIRST Robotics is a High School-level competitive robotics competition. Teams all over the world get a six-week period to design and build a robot to play a game with five other robots in a game at the regional competitions. Before the building starts, we don’t even know the game or it’s rules, so there is no way to plan ahead.

It’s six weeks of brainstorming, prototyping, arguing, designing and building before the robot gets shipped off to the competition.

As I write this, we are in week 5 of the process and behind schedule (as usual) and working on a podcast is sounding like a real good change of pace! In a week or so it will be over and there will only be a couple weekend competitions in March to go to.

And I should be able to get out and see some more shows and arrange some podcasts soon.

Now, if you’ve read this far, you’re a real die-hard fan and here’s a tidbit of news.

I’m planning another podcast. Something similar, but different from the Buffalo Live one. It will focus on local music as well, but be much shorter, more free-form and not necessarily be all live music. (Bands: feel free to send me you demos, samples, or other tracks for consideration.) It will have a theme for each show, not always the same, but the overall theme will still be the local music scene. I have a lot of material already and almost considered starting a while back, but just haven’t gotten around to it. I should get a couple episodes out soon so you can see what I mean.

The thing that’s different about the new podcast is it will be much shorter, much less reliant on live recordings and a lot easier for me to produce. The amount of behind-the-scenes work on the Buffalo Live show is probably a lot more than you’d realize. Hopefully, these shorter, more frequent, shows will find a niche in your listening habits. I’ll still be doing the live shows, just maybe not as many and not feel pressured to do one to keep up with some schedule I’m trying to fill.

Watch for an announcement with the title of the new show here. You won’t need a new URL, I’ll keep both shows right here! Thanks for your patience.
