Benefit Sunday for one of Allentown’s most beloved figures.

If you’ve ever been to Nietzsche’s on Allen Street, you’ve probably met him. The dapper gentleman at the door to the bar. No ordinary bouncer, in fact, he’s anything but a bouncer, he’s more a greeter.

Sure, he has to card anyone looking young enough to need it, but he always soft-pedals the job and prefers to meet everyone with a smile and handshake. If you’ve been there regularly, he’s just as likely to know you by name and always has a hug for the girls. The musicians always love him too: he’s guarding the jar with tips for the band and makes sure everyone knows it’s there.

Known just as P. J., he’s been a fixture at Nietzsche’s for as long as I’ve been going there, but now he needs our help. Recently, he’s been absent from his door duties, while undergoing treatment for cancer. I understand the prognosis is good and hopefully, he’s on his way to recovery soon. But as we all know, it hurts just as hard in the pocketbook. Loss of work, extra medical expenses, they all add up.

This Sunday, October 14th, they are holding a benefit for P. J. at - where else - Nietzsche’s. Starting at 2pm, some of Buffalo’s finest bands and Nietzsches’ regulars will play to raise money for him. The suggested donation is $10, but whatever you can give is appreciated.

Playing will be: The Fibs, The Steam Donkeys, Outer Circle Orchestra, The Pine Dogs, The Thirds and Rick Smith, The Great Train Robbery, John and Mary, Ann Phillipone, The Allen Street Jazz Band, Miss Vicky and The Tails.

You won’t find a finer line up or better cause. Why not drop by Nietzsche’s this Sunday and support the cause?

We love you, PJ! I just recently heard about this, & as a Cancer Survivor myself, I know PJ has to be going through alot of challenges. He’s always been very supportive to me, as a musician who’s been a regular performer @ Nietzsche’s, & as a friend. I haven’t been around Allen St much lately, but I will do my best to make it back there this Sunday for PJ! Get well soon, PJ! Love always, Liz
