After two years of promises, I finally got together with The Dustmen to do a podcast.
I’ve known Russ and Brian since before they formed The Dustmen. We all were fans of the former celtic band Kilbrannan and used to all be at the same shows. In fact, encouragement from Kirk McWhorter of Kilbrannan and now Penny Whiskey, was one of the things that got The Dustmen started.
Of course, we discuss some of the history of The Dustmen in the interview portion of the show. Read the rest of this entry »

If you’ve ever been to Nietzsche’s on Allen Street, you’ve probably met him. The dapper gentleman at the door to the bar. No ordinary bouncer, in fact, he’s anything but a bouncer, he’s more a greeter.
Sure, he has to card anyone looking young enough to need it, but he always soft-pedals the job and prefers to meet everyone with a smile and handshake. If you’ve been there regularly, he’s just as likely to know you by name and always has a hug for the girls. The musicians always love him too: he’s guarding the jar with tips for the band and makes sure everyone knows it’s there. Read the rest of this entry »

This is the final band I have from the Buffalo Original Music Festival last August 19th, 2007. I know it’s taken a while to get all of the great music out and into podcasts, but I hope it’s been worth the wait. It was a big project as well as a learning experience.
The intention is to make it an annual festival and I hope they do. The Colden Country Inn played host to it and they sure have a nice place for it there. The organizers knew exactly what they wanted to do as far as showcasing local musicians and put together an amazing lineup.
But back to the podcast. The band this week is Flood The Shoreline, a four-piece rock band that during school hails from SUNY Fredonia. Three of the band are from Niagara County, Niagara Falls and Lewiston. The fourth, is from Binghampton. So, they are based out of Fredonia, and it’s good to feature a band from the southern part of WNY. I hear a lot of good things about the music scene down that way, but unfortunately, don’t get down there much. Read the rest of this entry »

I’m sitting here listening to some of the first field recordings I’ve made with a new recorder, the Zoom H2, and I’m really impressed. I’ve got it plugged into my KRK Studio monitors and it’s sounding awesome.
I ordered this thinking it would make a great little interview recorder instead of the Marantz PMD-660 I currently use. It’s small enough to fit into my camera bag and save carrying one more thing into a podcast session.
It arrived today after a several week wait. I ordered mine from BSW, who in all fairness, advised me that there would be a delay. It actually came earlier than I was expecting and caught me by surprise.
By coincidence, I had a podcast recording session scheduled for that evening, so I quickly played around and learned how to use it. It really wasn’t hard. I had the basics down before I even cracked the manual, it’s that easy. Read the rest of this entry »

Mari Anderson at BOM Festival, Colden NY August 19, 2007
I had the pleasure to meet and record Mari Anderson at the BOM Festival. We went across the street to a little park and sat on a bench for the interview. I don’t know what it is about sitting down for an interview that always seems to make it more relaxing and go better, but I think I’m going to do it whenever possible from now on. We had what seemed more like a couple friends chatting than an interview and I ended up with almost 20 minutes worth. The whole podcast is about 45 minutes. I hope you like it.
