Podcast 60 - Brian Wheat & Groggy Darlin’

Brian WheatBrian Wheat and Groggy Darlin’ live at The Tralf May 25, 2007

I found Brian Wheat quite some time ago either from seeing his gigs listed at various places, or from his MySpace page. When I heard his samples on MySpace, I knew I’d like to put out a podcast with him. We swapped emails but I didn’t get out to see him until now. I actually just missed seeing him at the UB Center For The Arts where he appeared as part of one of the Music Is Art shows that were taped there for TV. But I was late and missed his show. I did get to see the other act, Babik, who appeared in an earlier podcast.

But we talked there, and when the Tralf gig came up, it seemed like a good time to try to get together for the podcast. It couldn’t have worked out better.

Brian and his band, Groggy Darlin’, were the first of three bands on a triple bill. All had ties to Lockport and eventually all three ended up being recorded for this podcast!

This is the first time I’ve recorded for the podcast at The Tralf. The Tralf, originally the Tralfamadore Cafe, has been one of the best places in Buffalo to see live music. There are a number of nationally known acts that come and play a show there every so often and it is known for it’s good sound and sight lines. The show was recorded with a single mono line out of the sound board and a single microphone at the side of the sound board. Despite the minimal hook up, I think it sounds really good and has that live show feel that I really want to capture for the podcast. Because of that, I’m going to play the show as a show, rather than pulling out individual songs. Not that I’m being lazy, it would be easy to do, but because it has such a good live-show vibe.
I hope you enjoy the between song chatter as well.

Groggy Darlin’ is:

Brian Wheat - vocals, guitat, tamborine
Peter Williams - bass
Mark Longolucco - drums
Peter Gerace - guitar, banjo

Brian has a number of shows on his tour this summer in places like NY, Brooklyn, Chicago and Hammond Ind. with Rachael Reis who contributed to his CD. For local shows, he’s playing in Jamestown about the time this podcast will come out, but two shows are in the works for Buffalo in August. One is a free outdoor, rooftop show at the Butler Library at Buffalo State College and the other is still in the works, so check his calendar for updates.
