Jackdaw – Blackgrass – Podcast 56

Tim of Jackdaw on guitarThey’re loud and raucus. They tell it like it is. They Hit Hard or Go Home. Their music is called “Brick-throwin’ Celtic Rock” They’re hard-drinkin’, fun-lovin, sons of South Buffalo and so are their fans. Their music reflects their point of view as working-class musicians. Their stories are those of life, love lost and injustice, yet are hopeful and exciting.

Their fans know that their live shows are an interactive celebration and keep coming back show after show. Every show is a different performance, yet the feel is always the same and there’s a sense of family among the fans. It’s what they come for. Of course, I’m talking about Jackdaw, the rock band with celtic influences from Buffalo.

Kung-Fu TimRecently, Jackdaw released a new CD – titled Blackgrass – and held a CD release show at Club W on Delaware Ave. in Buffalo. When I was invited to attend and record the show for this podcast, I jumped at the chance. Jackdaw was featured in an early show of this podcast, number six, to be exact. It was a small, almost acoustic show in a favorite hangout of Jackdaws’ – The Swannie House in South Buffalo’s Inner Harbor District. It turned out to be a night to remember with a capacity crowd, complete with a bar brawl, and the recording turned out great. Jackdaw liked some of it so much, it ended up in their two-disk Brilliant, Sad and Guilty CD on the second, live disc.

Jakdaw fans (Jackies)So, a little over a year later, we’re back to check out Jackdaw and their latest music. Much of the music on the CD is familiar to fans of their live shows, as they took some time to play them and get them they way they liked before they headed into the studio. The tracks were recorded at Dwane Hall’s Sessions Studio next door to the Sportsman’s Tavern.

I think the Blackgrass CD is Jackdaws‘ finest effort to date. I still like the raw, grab-you-by-the-throat feel of early CDs like Armed and Legged, but on this CD they have taken the instruments and arrangements to a higher level. You can tell a lot of thought and work went into it’s making.

GabrielleI have a wealth of material for this podcast, so much so that it has taken a lot of time, too long, to edit it all together. I’m going to follow a little different format in this show. I’m not going to announce the names of the songs, they’re all in the show notes if you don’t know them. I’m going to run the songs and overlay snippets from the interview into it. The music is going to be backgound for the interview I also have a guest interviewer, Gabrielle Bouliane, a videographer and reporter for Buffalo Rising, who is also a Jackdaw fan. So, you will hear her questions along with mine. Once again, I had a wealth of material, so I’ve taken highlights of the interviews and intermixed them. I hope you enjoy our chatting with the band on their bus after the show. You can hear a version of this podcast containing only the music tracks by following the link in the shownotes.
