Podcast 54 - Doug Yeomans and the Low Blue Flame
Recorded at the Sportsmans Tavern, Buffalo 3-28-2007
Someone I had really wanted to feature in the podcast was Doug Yeomans, but I hadn’t gotten around to asking him about it until recently. Happily, he agreed and we got together to record the Low Blue Flame show at the Sportsmens.
Probably the first place many people heard of Doug and something we mention in the interview, was his winning of the North American Guitar Competition in 2001. But he has also won the Buffalo Music Award for Best Country Lead Guitar in 1999 and the Buffalo Music Award for Best Blues Guitarist in 2001. Probably a few lesser awards I didn’t mention too.
But let’s not dwell on that. Doug’s not just a great guitarist, he’s a great guy as well. I really enjoyed chatting with him and it turned into the longest interview I’ve done so far.
Besides that, even though he said he could have played more original material for me, I had more than enough out of the two sets I recorded that night. I don’t know what it is about the Sportsmens, but I just can’t get a bad recording there. Must be the mojo from Sessions Studio next door.
Playing in the Lo Blu Flame were:
Jim Ehinger - keyboards
Rob Lynch - drums
Steve Sadoff (forgive me if I misspell that) - bass
Doug - guitar and vocals
Jim Ehinger is yet another of those Buffalo musicians who keep popping up all over - like Rob Lynch, Jim Whitford, Nelson Starr, Geno McManus, John Brady etc. - you always find them playing with other great musicians but never taking the spotlight for themselves, even though they could with ease. He showed up with a trophy that he duct-taped to his keyboard. It was won at the Sportsmens for a chili cook-off and he was proud to bring it back to it’s place of origin. He even contributed to the studio tracks on Jackdaw’s new album Blackgrass, which we will be talking about in an upcoming podcast.

Hola Carlos!
Thanks for the comment. I got the general idea despite my poor understanding of spanish, but checked with Babelfish anyway
[Translation: hello to all (hi) it is pleasant to me to know that places exist where they cultivate the art, and specially desearia to know of the presentations of Mary Ramsey & John Lombardo, duo for my brilliant, good one I hope to receive the news, atte Carlos from Peru.]
You’ve probably already listened to the podcast of John and Mary with The Valkyries. I’m a fan of John & Mary as well and they do play as a duo fairly often. I’ll try to catch them for a podcast that way too sometime.
