Podcast #32 - A bit of this, A bit of that…
![]()
Three bands that I want to bring you, but didn’t really have enough to put in a podcast of their own.
Uncle Seth - You Don’t Need An Ipod (PMN)
Tara of the Toronto band Uncle Seth wrote me to tell me about their new song “To Be An Angel” which was recently premiered on CBC Radio One. They are a band that has achieved some of their success due to embracing podcasting. I first heard of them on CC Chapman’s Accident Hash podcast and featured one of their songs in an early experimental podcast of Christmas music. So they’re giving podcaster an advance on the song before it’s released to iTunes. Hope you like it!

I’ve wanted to put the Lowertown Trio in a podcast for a long time and I finally got out to record a show this summer at Gonzo’s in Lockport. They gave me a great interview, which I’ll play here. We were standing on the walkway outside the club which overlooks the historic Lockport Locks in the Erie Canal.
Jason and Chris VanCleve have both toured with the Psychobilly band The Quakes and talked quite a bit about touring and seeing the world as “Rock Stars.” Turns out to be not as glamorous as you’d think.
Unfortunately, I only have two original songs from them. They play a lot of great interpretations of rockabilly standards and I wish I could play more.

I met the Lincolns’ Shootin’ Fools at the Mohawk Place just this last week and since I had been sitting on the Lowertown Trio material, I thought they’d be a good fit together and let me get the LT3 out in a podcast. They’re similar styles, though not exactly the same. But this was one where again they gave me a pretty good interview and some decent recordings.
I’m going to go out on a limb and play their track Rasputin, both because I like it and so I can play a snippet of the original song it’s based on. It’s a long way from the Boney M version.

If you liked the Boney M song, check out this derivative song in video, by Dschingis Khan. Keep a straight face, if you can!

If you like the Boney M cover Rasputin, the Celtic Pop band The Town Pants now cover the song as well!
The Town Pants will be playing in the Buffalo area this summer (2007) a couple of times. August 17th at the Buffalo Irish Center and September 15th at the Niagara Celtic Heritage Festival in Olcott NY. They just finished a two-day appearance at the Great Blue Heron Music Festival in Sherman NY and will also be playing in Corning NY. Not bad for a band that calls Vancouver BC home.
