Podcast #14: Flatbed

Flatbed, recorded live at the Mohawk Place, Saturday March 25, 2006.

I finally got back into the swing of things and got out to the Mohawk last Saturday to record a podcast with two groups - Flatbed and Red & Roxy. I apologize for my absence from the podcast world last week. I had to be out of town for two successive weekends, which makes it had to keep a podcast in the works.
Derek and Joelle of Flatbed
But this should more than make up for it. Flatbed is a band that I liked from the first listen. I was introduced to them through Dee Adams when her band opened for them at Merlin’s a while ago (Michael Tinsmon, the bass player is also in the Housecats.) I liked what I heard and I hope you will too. They are “Americana” country-rock with blues and jazz influences and a totally unique signature sound.

I have the biggest crush on Joelle, the lead singer. Her voice is so cool, yet different and her stage demeanor and look is coy and wholesome, yet sexy at the same time. Boy, if I was 30 years younger, look out!

The band’s sound at times can sound like anything from Big Brother & the Holding Company to Grateful Dead to Donna The Buffalo or more contemporay groups like the Bottle Rockets or Uncle Tupelo. But through it all they have their own sound and draw from many influences. Derek Bassett the main lyricist has a way of writing about things you wouldn’t necessarily expect to write a song about, yet they come out with as much meaning as any typical topic.

Songs included in the podcast are:
